  1. A-MAZED IN ORIAB 1 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "Iced On Aran," by Brian Lumley, published by Ganley in 1992.

When I read a science fiction book I'm hoping it will give me something to think about, something interesting that I didn't know before I read the book.

But sometimes I look forward to reading a book just to be entertained, I'm not expecting to be "enlightened". And it doesn't have to be science fiction. I found such books written by Stuart M. Kaminsky. He wrote a long series of books, over twenty of them featuring Hollywood Private Eye, Toby Peters. The stories take place in the late 1930s and 1940s and each book features a famous celebrity of the time, like Cary Grant, John Wayne, Betty Davis, W.C. Fields, and others. In each book a celebrity is in danger, and hires PI Peters to save them. Lots of fun.

But Kaminsky surpassed the Toby Peters series with another long series about a Russian Police Officer, Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov, a low level police chief who, with three assistants solves major crimes, for which the politically driven head of the department always takes the credit. Every one of these books features outstanding drama.

Holy Cow! I just took count and I see that I have read more books written by Kaminsky, over 50, than by any other author. Obviously, I recommend both series to you, especially if you are a bit gray around the temples.
